Telling your parents the pay has dropped
Adult children in this province often carry a parent’s medicine and a sibling’s school fees. A pay cut is easier to explain with figures than with an apology that never names an amount.
In many houses around Yi-ngo, money sent to parents is not a gift added at the end. It is a bill near the top of the list. When your pay drops, the fear is not only the landlord. It is the phone call. Shame makes people promise the old amount for one more month, and then for another, until the shortfall has moved into a loan.
Bring a number, not only an apology
Parents can meet a smaller figure more easily than they can meet a mood. Before the conversation, write the old monthly amount, the amount you can still send, and the month you will review it again. If you do not know the middle number yet, book the plan review first and have the family talk after the note exists.
Say what the money was for. Medicine is different from a renovation. If the renovation can wait and the medicine cannot, the conversation has a shape. If everything feels equally urgent, that is a sign to sit with the papers before you sit with your parents.
Choose a time that is not a festival
A pay cut announced in the middle of a wedding week will be heard as a rejection of the family, even if you meant it as honesty. Ask for a quiet afternoon. Offer the figures on paper so nobody has to remember them through tears or irritation.
If you and a spouse disagree about what to tell them, do not improvise two versions. The shared-earnings conversation is built for that disagreement. Two different stories, told to the same parent a week apart, cost more trust than the missing money.
You may keep a private margin
Honesty does not require you to turn out every pocket. You can say, “This is what I can send, and I am keeping a small margin for the months the buyer pays late.” A margin is not deceit. It is how a thin month stays survivable. What you should not do is invent a figure you already know you will miss.
If the talk goes badly, you can still pay the amount you named. The relationship may need longer than the budget. The plan only has to be clear enough that you are not funding the old promise with a new debt.
